ALABAMA ATHLETICS

Sports Illustrated cover

There has never been a better time to be an athlete at the University of Alabama. With world-class facilities, unmatched fan support, and the best collection of coaches in America, Alabama's athletic department represents the gold standard in college athletics. The proof is in the championships: In 2011-12 Alabama's athletic department brought home an astonishing four Division I National Titles -- football, softball, gymnastics, and women's golf. In addition to these four, men's golf finished second nationally, and men's basketball advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Athletic success is part of the culture at Alabama. Fans and alumni take great pride in the teams' success, and the university administration does all it can to support coaches and athletes. There is a reason Alabama Athletics has such a rich tradition. Championships are not won by accident. They are the product preparation, vision, teamwork, and passion. Roll Tide!

"No one can help but be aware of the rich tradition that is associated with this team and this University. Tradition is a burden in many ways. To have a tradition like ours means that you can't lose your cool; to have tradition like ours means you always have to show class, even when you are not quite up to it; to have tradition like ours means that you have to do some things that you don't want to do and some you even think you can't do, simply because tradition demands it of you. On the other hand, tradition is that which allows us to prevail in ways that we could not otherwise."
-- Former Alabama President David Mathews
